I don't think AI can create art. Art springs out of the artist's unique life experience and character. Flawed, messy, tragic, comic, senseless, heroic, wise, foolish, immature and then mature - it's qualities like these, lensed through the artist's work, to which we relate. But for there to be any commonality of experience to make art accessable, artist and beholder must be somewhat alike. I think seeing the artist's ideas and intent lensed through the work of an AI would always distort and dehumanize the final piece, and distance the beholder one step removed from understanding and appreciation. The piece itself might be intriguing and even fantastic, but relatable? Meaningful?
When we ourselves create art, we say both more and less than we intend, which is wonderful. Through AI we would say less, and that's all I think is certain.
