A Manifesto on Artificial Intelligence and Human Fragility: Many believe they are anticipating the impact of artificial intelligence. They are not. The most consequential effects will unfold at levels that remain largely unexamined and poorly understood. What is coming will be deeply destabilizing. The instability will begin with the individual and radiate outward through families, communities, institutions, and nations. The current volatility in the United States is often attributed to political leadership. This explanation is convenient but incomplete. Leadership has not created these conditions. It has merely exposed deeper epistemological failures that have been developing for decades and intensifying rapidly. Our shared sense of truth is eroding. Trust in institutions, in neighbors, and even in family members is collapsing. Meaning has been replaced by distraction, and purpose has been substituted with mechanisms of instant gratification that do not sustain the human spirit. These fractures were not caused by artificial intelligence. But artificial intelligence will place unprecedented pressure on the same existential frameworks already nearing collapse. It will accelerate confusion, deepen alienation, and magnify distrust. It will not correct the underlying failures. It will expose them, amplify them, and push them beyond their breaking point. The psychological cost of our current way of life is already severe. Rather than confronting this reality, we are preparing to offload even more human agency. This is not a neutral technological shift. When agency is surrendered, responsibility dissolves. When responsibility dissolves, identity weakens. When identity weakens, social cohesion fails. The resulting shock will move through every layer of society. Public discourse fixates on capability, speed, and efficiency. Almost no attention is given to what is being undermined. Judgment. Purpose. Creativity. Resilience. Meaning. These are not optional human traits. They are the foundation of stable societies. This is the moment to slow down. To involve philosophers, ethicists, and serious thinkers. To coordinate deliberately and globally. Not to halt progress, but to understand its cost. Without foresight, the trajectory leads not to liberation, but to disorder. We will not anticipate the full impact. We will not deploy effective countermeasures in time. We do not understand the magnitude of mental and social strain ahead. And we will not act with sufficient restraint to govern the spread and influence of artificial intelligence. By the time we respond, the outcome will already be shaped. The train has left the station.
