i'll be honest. when the first publicly available ai models made their way onto the scene, i was actually kinda hyped? but not in the way of "oh finally i don't have to *make* things anymore" but more of "oh wow this is what robots think art is? neat." because the ai was so bad, blurry, smudged and all sorts of other descriptors. it was a fun tool to make weird pictures from. i even remember using it to help think of thumbnails for my art project, but only really as a color direction considering how bad it was at that point. i didn't think of using it for anything else, since i still liked the rest of the art process. i didn't think it *could* be used in art for anything outside of inspiration. and then it suddenly got "better". some people who used it stopped publicly announcing that the art was made with ai. they passed it off as their own, or otherwise allowed viewers to assume the art was created by them. there were (and still are) some people who even did "art" commissions, having people *pay* them to do nothing but put text into a box. it's terrifying. i hate how far ai has come. i hate how the creators of it seem to only care about their little program and not the things they steal to make it work. i hate that one of the most used search engines now has ai "art" as some of the first results in the image search. i hate that it's become such an ingrained thing. i hate it. so much. and i can't help but feel slightly guilty. because people like me, who used it out of curiosity, for inspiration, or otherwise a bit of fun image generation - we sort of helped it get hyped, didn't we? if i could go back and have myself and every other person i knew used it to stop, immediately, i would. but then i wonder if it would do that much, if there are people out there always wanting to do the bare minimum, always wanting to cash in off of everyone else's work. sorry for the (possibly incoherent) rant. but the video just made me think on some things.
