UBI isn't intended to "solve" the automation crisis. It's a transitional measure which realigns economic value to human well being. Putting money into people's hands directly infuses the local, independent economy to prosper in the face of an ever expanding corporate conquest. It allows people to start their own business and to make family life more abundant and secure. The more jobs that are replaced by automation, the more we as humans must reevaluate our personal worth and how we define "work" altogether.
