If AI has done anything so far, it has increased job security for developers. AI was never going to replace senior developers engineering systems. Code is a tool, no different than a hammer, measuring tape, or pencil. Developing software systems well requires reasoning. LLM AI does not reason, cannot reason, and never will reason. When I first heard AI was going to replace software developers, it was like hearing the nail gun is going to replace carpenters or calculators will replace mathematicians. Except the nail gun and calculator will go down in history as being far more positive and impactful. The best use case for LLM based AI is performing complex statistical computation in contexts with very large, very high quality training datasets where the amount of processable data is unfathomably large, like AlphaFold. I don't see anyone saying AlphaFold will soon replace structural biologists
