So! I’m old enough to remember when Photoshop entered the scene, and the controversy surrounding it are some of the same points being made with AI. Over time, Photoshop artists have become a thing, and while there is still some disagreements about whether is counts or not, it’s now so ingrained into our media most people don’t even realize it’s an altered photo. Magazines to freeway billboards, all are edited images anymore. Now! At the risk of getting all of the hate, I’m going to point out some benefits of using AI as a tool - not to generate a final product, or to outright steal someone’s art, but just as another tool like photoshop. Point 1) People who have some kind of disability that prevents them from creating artwork they are happy with. Example 1) I know someone who despite loving to draw and paint, is physically unable to end up with what they see in their head end up on their canvas (they have a lack of depth perception). They have taken many art classes over the years (it’s where I met them), but their skill level never progressed past the point of amateur at best, and they were never happy with the end results and would refuse to show it to anyone beyond close family and friends who would never judge their artwork. They discovered AI a few months back and fell in love with the technology. They can describe what they see in their head, find an image very close to what they want, then they use that as the backbone of their artwork to keep the perceptions and depth of field accurate to what THEY see (not what everyone else sees). It has greatly improved their artwork to the point they’re happy sharing their artwork now. Example 2) My aunt was a talented artist in many mediums up until she developed Parkinson’s disease several years ago. As it has progressed, she’s lost her ability to play the organ/piano for her church, her ability to write/draw/paint/cook, and she’s now starting to loose her ability to sing. I introduced her to AI as a way for her to still express her creativity in a way she still can do, and it’s helped reduce the depression she’s experiencing at the loss of her abilities. It has also become a way for her to still share her talents with her great-grandchildren. Point 2: for those who suffer from an over-imagination as a way to get the crowding out of their head I personally suffer from having too many ideas in my head and barely any time to make them into a reality, and I know a few others who suffer from this as well. I use AI as a tool, not unlike Dumbledore’s Pensieve, to throw my ideas into it to get them out of my head, and then to pick which ones I want to dedicate my limited time into creating myself. I’m literally one in the camp that uses AI to free up my time because there’s no way I can create everything in my head by myself. I have artist friends who use me as their prompt for their next project lol. Point 3) As a way for an artist to create a mood board for their next project - usually fantasy/sci-fi artists who don’t have real-world points of reference. In these points AI is used as a tool, no different than those who took to Photoshop from collage-art . It’s just another way to express oneself. That said, I agree with many of your points in the video. AI should never be the only tool used, it should never be used to steal an artists style, should never be claimed as one’s own artwork, and I feel, even if it’s only 1 of several tools used, it’s use should be disclaimed. I think as it becomes more widely used, laws and media sites will put limiters on AI generated content. But the until then, it’s going to be a rocky road.
