It's grotesque, deceptive and violent because it's trained on the human sewer that is the internet. This is like the short story "Guyal of Sefere" by Jack Vance -- there's a repository of all knowledge, and a Demon has kind of accreted deep in its bowels, as a concentrated form of the worst parts of humanity. It leaves the nearby village alone as long as they continually sacrifice a boy and girl from the village for the demon to "have it's way" with. The main character asks why it would be obsessed with these very human acts if its an entity from another dimension. The keeper of the repository explains that it was formed basically as a concentrate of humanity's deepest darkest thoughts and desires -- the worst parts of the repository -- so it's obsessions and perversions are characteristically human in nature.
Basically maps 1:1 onto our situation with the internet and AI.
In the story, information is stored on spools of wire and they eventually unravel the demon by winding it up onto millions of such spools, stored as data.
