AI won't completely wipe out white-collar jobs, but it will make them much less valuable compared to other kinds of jobs. We already have a huge surplus of college-educated people who have studied subjects whose expertise is not strongly wanted on the job market. The same will happen with typical white-collar jobs. AI will not automate all of them, but it will automate 90% of their job description, so that there will be far fewer white-collar jobs, especially in text production, entertainment and the arts fields.
Every city will always need electricians, heating contractors and brickmakers, so the value of these jobs compared to the other jobs will rise. AI won't completely get rid of all white-collar jobs, it will make them much more profitable and specialized, but the sheer amount of white-collar jobs will absolutely decrease.
And honestly, the comparison with past examples is ludicrous. Only typists lost their jobs. Now we are already seeing many artists, dubbers, musicians, text workers, authors and actors start to lose their jobs.
Honestly, the real AI assault on the job market hasn't yet begun. It will only happen starting this year, but ChatGPT wasn't powerful enough to enact major change until last year, so the comparison to the last three years is completely unhelpful and unrepresentative. It's like saying in 1984 that computers haven't really changed much because the past 4 years or so haven't led to much.
