I just started on AI coding, and I can say it is the greatest time to be a software engineer, and the worst time in history to be a programmer. In my mind, a software engineer is the one who can draw a proper functional architecture. And a programmer is the person who receives an artifact and translate it to a technology. AI is blurring the wall between concept and creation: now I can think a software and I can have it done in a couple of week. While in the past the same architecture would have to be passed to someone that maybe dont fully understand the big ideas behind an architecture and think everything can be dont with if-else and hardcoded magic strings. IMO AI is there to empower software engineering that no longer have to negotiate with someone else to have something done. The effort to make a product clear for a programmer is the same effort to make it clear in the prompt. The results are also good. If I want a proper design pattern implemented, I wont have to deal with a programmer looking down on you, thinking youre just bullshitting, and that he (the programmer) is the one who knows how it should be done.
