There is this other youtuber, Primer, which makes videos about simulating various "artificial populations" (we call the individuals of said populations "blobs"). The tldr way it works is that he creates a sort of ecosystem in which blobs are given different parameters, and the blobs who do not perform well in the ecosystem get removed while the better performing ones are allowed to continue living in the ecosystem.
While it is pretty rudimentary, the more parameters that the blobs and ecosystem are given, the more frightenly similar these population become to biological beings. I truly believe that if we create an artificial ecosystem and introduce slightly-different-self replicating artificial intelligences along with artificial death for the less efficient AIs, we could very well one day create an artificial evolution. And just the same way we became conscious from dead stuff mindlessly replicating itself, the mindlessly replicating artificial stuff could one day become actual artificial life
