All of these estimates on the benefits of AI and robotics seem to ignore one simple economic truth: If the "lower" classes are unemployed and have no income, who will be buying all of these products? In the 1970s, my Dad observed that the introduction of world-wide markets made it possible for companies to make a profit without incurring the higher costs of American labor. Fifty years later, they want to play the second verse, same as the first, BUT this time, there are no new markets, there are no new profits to be made. Any profits generated by robotics and AI are illusory and transitory. (If you're old enough to remember the introduction of ATMs, they were written off as a cost savings because banks needed to employ fewer tellers. Within 20 years, banks began charging ATM fees because without the offset of reduced payroll, ATMs were seen as a cost center rather than a source of revenue.) For all their supposed financial genius, these people ignore the basic fact that economies require the CIRCULATION of money. Riches stored in a vault are only POTENTIAL economic energy. Nothing less than a radical redistribution of wealth will remedy the situation for them and for all of the paupers they are creating.
