I’m writing a book, so here’s some background. I have severe learning disabilities and was born with cerebral palsy, along with other physical challenges. Communication has always been hard for me, especially writing. In school I relied on special education to try to keep up, but writing was a constant stumbling block. Generative AI, like ChatGPT, has changed that. It helps me organize my thoughts and clean up my dictation, and for the first time I don’t feel inferior when I write. I’m working on my memoir and hope to publish it, and without this technology I wouldn’t have a realistic path to finishing a book. I’m proof that AI can be an incredible tool that improves lives. We need less doom-and-gloom and a more balanced view that includes the benefits, not just hypothetical negatives. In education, sure, you can over-rely on generative AI, but if you’re paying for college and you cheat, you’re only cheating yourself. For people like me, this technology has been a real blessing, giving me a way to contribute in a meaningful way.
