I love using AI for the boring stuff, like writing boilerplate code or learning something new. But running a real, live application or website is a completely different challenge. AI can help you understand and fix parts of a codebase, but a real app or website often has hundreds or even thousands of files. These files include configuration files, package files, CI/CD files, Docker files, database query files, API files, security files, cloud infrastructure files, and many business logic files. On top of that, these files are spread across dozens of repositories, all interconnected and dependent on each other, with entire teams of engineers working on each repository.
The codebase isn’t static either. It’s not like once you write the entire codebase you're done. It needs constant upkeep, maintenance, bug fixes, handling tech debt, optimization, and documentation. When new features need to be added, you need someone who understands the existing codebase and can integrate the new feature without breaking anything. Plus, you need actual Human Beings who can talk to your customers and get user requirements, ask clarifying questions, come up with a plan to add the features that the customer wants and think about and handle all the edge cases, AI can't do this. Major updates to an app or website often require code freezes, checks, and careful planning. And when the site or app goes down, engineers need to be on call to fix critical issues in real time.
On top of all that, technology keeps changing. There are always new programming languages, tools, libraries, frameworks, and updates to existing tech. This means engineers need to revisit old code, update outdated packages and tools, and keep learning the new technology as it comes and utilize it in their codebase.
If AI could handle all of this on its own, managing the entire codebase of an application or website, then sure, software engineers could be replaced. But until that day comes, rest assured, AI is a helper, not a replacement. Software Engineers are still needed.
