AI is not self aware and it never will be. At one time I did think that consciousness was just a function of neurons arranged and firing in a certain pattern and it would just be a matter of replicating that pattern to create consciousness. The why and the what is too complex to get into here but being aware is the one thing you can't replicate or fake. Everything else that's peripheral to it can be, any sense organ or stimulus can be "faked", pretty easily in fact, but that feeling that "I exist" cannot be. AI will seem to be self aware but it will never be.
