Even if it is "just" a set of pattern-matching formulas stitched together to simulate reasoning and consciousness, it does not matter as long as it convincingly looks like real reasoning from the outside and outperforms 99% of people. Where people go wrong is comparing AI to top human performers and concluding it is not even close. The reality is that 99% of seats in corporate America are filled by disengaged rest-and-vest employees, counting the hours until lunch break and 5pm, not geniuses eager to do the work. If AI appears more capable than 99% of the colleagues you interact with daily, it is fair to say many of those roles are easily replaceable. The only real exception will be jobs that require physical presence and manipulation of physical objects, and even that may hold only until cheaper robots reach the market.
