I remember once seeing someone on discord being mad that someone posted a video about using tools to protect your work from AI, being like: "Artists are such hypocrites, they complain about copyright, but they're not against it so long as it benefits them!" And it's such a stupid idea, because OF COURSE WE ARE NOT AGAINST THE IDEA OF COPYRIGHT! WE NEED OUR WORK TO BE PROTECTED, OUR WORK IS OUR OWN, IT BELONGS TO US! WE MADE IT! What we are against is the way copyright is currently implemented, and we usually advocate for a reform of the system because of it, but not for it's ERASURE, as that would fuck us over. Hell, this whole debacle over AI is only further evidence to why 1: Copyright needs to exist, and 2: Copyright NEEDS to be reformed, as it can be easily abused by corporations. Like, they only pay for using data for training if it belongs to a massive corporation that can fight back, meanwhile those same mega corporations are more than happy to steal other people's work and use it without credit for profit, with or without AI involved! Smaller creators tho, they get their shit stolen and there's NOTHING they can do about it other than raise awareness for it. Corporations are more than willing to issue DMCA takedowns, or copyright strikes or lawsuits on people making fan content of their IP's (cof cof, Nintendo, cof cof), but hypocritically, these SAME FUCKING COMPANIES ARE MORE THAN WILLINGLY TO PLAGIARIZE FROM SMALLER CREATORS, and it's even more true for Disney as their entire legacy is literally built off of adapting public domain stories, yet they fight tooth and nail to prevent Mickey from going public domain, they're literally built on adapting other people's work, yet are willing to mess with people doing the same. This AI bullshit is proof that copyright is necessary, but that it is useless in it's current state, as for copyright to do what it's supposed to do, as in PROTECTING ARTISTS AND THEIR WORK, the laws of copyright need to apply to EVERYONE, EQUALLY, REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH POWER AND MONEY THEY HAVE! So again, fuck AI, fuck plagiarists, you don't deserve respect, you deserve every kind of lawsuit going on your way, and also fuck disney and fuck mega corporations.
