There are already tools with AI art where you can use depth maps and line art or any other number of things to direct it. I predict the digital artists that are actual competent artists and are willing to hold their nose to use it (that is to say someone who's competent might still refuse, not to say that they're incompetent just by virtue of refusal) as another tool in their kit rather than the entire box will outperform both the digital artists who refuse to adapt and the code monkeys who refuse to pick up a pencil and draw for themselves. It *can* be used as a better photoshop rather than just generating images wholesale now. I could potentially see an age where an artist using their own local ai trained off of their own art being able to di some very interesting if the tools continue to improve. As for expenses, Nvidia cards these days are amazing for ai generation on top of being a go to choice for gaming. To those gamers it's "low cost of entry" for really only that reason. Basically anyone who wants VRAM will end up with some decent local ai capability while pursuing their other hobbies. I'm learning this evil terrible thing so obviously I'm biased. Though for me learning the image and video generation is just the first part rather than my goal. I'm working towards making full companions/assistants off of multiple local and tailored AIs. I also use it for my tabletop games. I never commissioned art for those before so I'm not going to start now just because AI exists while also not taking advantage of said AI. Call it art theft but I feel like copying links to other people's ocs or book art isn't any less of a theft and that's what 95% of people do in online tabletop. I see the moral side of your argument and admire you for being creative in your protest all the same. AI as a tool use case you can do today: draw a detailed face for your OC, put it through a preprocessor, and you can easily apply it to any other face at any angle across different art styles with very high consistency. Absolutely nothing stopping you from just using with and on YOUR art from a moral perspective, I think.
