As someone who is not themselves an artist, I want to defend AI *very* narrowly.
I think the tech dudebros generating images out of prompts like "Spingebob and Megatron eating cake on a Mars beach" or something similar are complete hacks, and tryint to pass that slop off as art is an insult.
However, I do think there is something in intentionally pushing an AI model to its breaking point to see what comes out the other end, and calling that process a piece of art.
Like... taking a chocolate cake recipe, direct translating it to Russian, translating that result to Swahili, then to German, and so on for dozens of languages before converting it all back to English, and using the resulting nonsense blob as poetry to make commentary on our inability to communicate our feelings.
I think there is a space in art for that sort of use of AI, but that is very clearly not the sort of thing techbros are interested in, because it would require an ounce of creativity.
