Several things are wrong with this!!! Has anyone noticed that when education got the big idea to start having kids reading and writing in preschool, alarm bells like “nuclear warhead incoming” should have been going off!!! No, society sat back and thought this will be great. Introduce these skills at an earlier age and education can pump more knowledge into them, thus making us the smartest country ever. If anyone who knows anything about education and brain development, one can only introduce specific concepts when the child has the capacity to learn it. The skills being forced upon kids now; their brains aren’t developmentally ready for.
When I was in school, preschool through first grade were about basic skills and concepts; anyone remember those? This is how we share. This is how we wait in a line. Johnny, let’s let Betty finish talking and then you can say what you would like to say. It’s not nice to take something that belongs to someone else, so how can we make this right? Show me the color blue? Which letter has the /k/ and /s/ sound? I like the way you stayed inside the lines when you colored his pants. Why is the grass pink? ALL THE QUESTIONS WE USED TO HELP KIDS LEARN ESPECIALLY THROUGH PLAY ARE GONE!!! THEIR FINE MOTOR SKILLS (developed by coloring, cutting, playing with blocks, building things, holding a pencil, tracing letters or animal shapes) GONE!!! PLEASE DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE SOCIAL SKILLS (yes sir, no thank you, pardon, excuse me, waiting in line, lets walk) ALL THOSE SKILLS ABOUT INTERACTING WITH OTHERS IN SOCIETY WITHOUT IT ENDING UP ON X, YOUTUBE, DISCORD OR SOME OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM.
I was around during the development of the internet. I thought, this is going to be great. I remember telling my mom we didn’t have to have the set of encyclopedias at the house anymore cause we could just look stuff up. Yep, going to be magic. WRONG!!!! Leave it to us to make everything bad.
In theory, AI is wonderful. I’m all for it. Especially for it if it can help those who have some gaps in learning get caught up. It stops there!!! I’m also for cursive writing, after I’ve had 30-40 kids tell me they wanted to learn cursive so they could sign stuff. Has anyone thought about the historical documents students are no longer able to read? Lincoln’s speeches, Declaration of Independence, all those documents are no longer useful because they can’t be read.
Truth is, we’ve done school the same way for the past 100+ years. Not a lot has really changed, “in the classroom” per se except instead of rows of desks, there maybe groups of desks. The groups were supposed to fix the collaborative piece the students didn’t get when they were in elementary, but that hasn’t worked. Yeah, grouping was also supposed to help with social emotional regulation (when two group members didn’t do their part of the project and the grade now reflects on the team; kids start “crashing out” because that’s not fair. The newest thing now is to implement social emotional learning into everything; I think that’s going to work like everything else did….big fat zero!
If the powers that be would implement a campaign like this is your brain on drugs. You know the one like we had growing up but flip it like…this is your child’s brain on an iPad, this is the results, any questions? Show pictures of images of no iPad brain vs iPad brain noting the destruction occurring at whatever age screens are introduced. Another great example would be to put a kid pictured on a screen happy, no problems; then bad grades= no screen Xbox, ps5, etc. and the kid destroys the house…any questions? But these are just my thoughts.
