Why does the US have to be the first with AI? The US is near the bottom of the list of best schools and education. I think having a purpose in life is one of the greatest needs we will face. AI is a technology that will make machines that can do the work of most everyday humans. This will either make people feal worthless or completely satisfied depending on how we build the infrastructure of life's purpose to a new level. If we can find new constructive projects for people to work on who get replaced by AI. Projects that were previously impossible due to complexity and not being able to generate funds from the project. Today the most obvious would be space travel. It is hard to comprehend what all things will look like in just a decade.
