The procedural generation metaphor does not quite work, because unlike most AI it does have a purpose and function, which is mainly to cut down time on the development by generating randomized assets like terrain, textures, levels etc. The problem is not procedural generation in that case, it’s that whatever was generated isn’t interesting enough by itself. A good chunk of games feature heavy procedural generation, however in most cases it’s still paired with some kind of manual design. Creating a huge world is all nice and dandy but if there’s nothing to do, it doesn’t matter even if it was made entirely by hand, it’s gonna be unengaging/boring. It’s a tool (and deliberately a shortcut, that’s a feature not a bug) that used correctly enhances an experience and if used incorrectly detracts from it. (Just making sure a pretty important tool for that kind of design doesn’t catch strays for dumb stuff AI does 😂) Problem with AI is that 1) it’s a blackbox and 2) it doesn’t just shortcut part of a larger process, it skips the entire thing altogether. As someone that studied design, that is a problem as it as was accurately pointed out leaves intention up to literal probability. Granted have seen some pretty funny and impressive stuff done with AI, but very clearly it was almost always manually corrected after. Personally I have a much bigger beef with intellectual property and deterioration of public trust of it all than creating content devoid of artistry (don’t necessarily need a machine for that), where genuine intention and often innovation just ends up as fodder to create more consumption. Like there is something deeply cynical of automating a reflection on human experience and feeding it back to people through the lens of an overengineered chatbot that simply remixes it‘s training data (which in many cases was taken against the will of the original creators).
