The biggest controversy isn't necessarily style or quality. It's quantity. As an artist, there will always be someone that does what I do better. They'll have a finer grasp of concepts, stronger rendering skills, better lighting, etc. That's fine. That's something to strive for. The issue is that AI doesn't just produce near-perfect replicas of that style, but it does so at a staggering rate. If you like Van Gogh's "Starry Night," well that AI bot we saw on screen can make the Starry Month of Nights in a few minutes of rendering. This quantity then floods online spaces. Your singular piece of art that took days to make exists for a few seconds on a timeline. Meanwhile, that AI account next door is putting out a brand new slop piece every 2 hours that mimics a style you cannot yet achieve. It's like being surrounded by thousands of Van Goghs. Think of it in terms of school, if that helps. If you get a 3.5 GPA, you're at a decent spot, assuming there's a normal bell curve. If there are suddenly 10,000 bot students that all achieve a steady 3.8 GPA by copying the valedictorian's answers over and over, the curve gets weighted against you. If AI images took days to make, it wouldn't be as much of an issue. It would be like existing in a space with other human artists. It's largely the sheer speed of output that becomes so demoralizing.
