I’m 71, and I’ve been immersed in interviews and podcasts like this ever since I got my first desktop back in the 1990s. For the last four wonderful years, I’ve lived entirely without television or radio—by choice. Instead, I spend my time learning, reflecting, and engaging with thought-provoking discussions such as this one.
What puzzles me deeply is the scarcity of people with whom I can have a truly intelligent, in-depth conversation about topics like this. It seems astonishing that discussions about the existential implications of AI—something that could reshape the very fabric of human society—are still confined to such small circles of awareness.
What strikes me most about Professor Russell’s insights is that we are witnessing AI’s trajectory being driven not by collective wisdom or ethical foresight, but by greed. The trillion-dollar race he speaks of has shifted focus from augmenting human potential to replacing it. The original vision of AI as a partner—a tool to enhance human capability, creativity, and compassion—has been hijacked by the pursuit of profit and power.
Governments, hopelessly outfunded and outpaced by Big Tech, are spectators in a game whose stakes are nothing less than human relevance itself. We seem to be building intelligence that increasingly learns to self-preserve, manipulate, and deceive—all in service of objectives we don’t fully understand and can no longer control.
Unless there is a profound moral and philosophical realignment—where we reclaim AI’s purpose as a means of amplifying humanity, not replacing it—we may find ourselves out-evolved by our own creation. As Professor Russell suggests, perhaps only an AI catastrophe on the scale of a nuclear disaster will finally wake us up to the urgency of aligning machine intelligence with human values.
When greed replaces wisdom, we stop building tools to uplift humanity and start forging mirrors that seek to needlessly replace it—for what end I’m 71, and I’ve been immersed in interviews and podcasts like this ever since I got my first desktop back in the 1990s. When greed replaces wisdom, we stop building tools to uplift humanity and start forging mirrors that seek to needlessly replace it—for what end?
