AI companies should have the right to buy a copy of each book and do what they want with it. If a user uses AI to write a novel for income using AI’s capacities, they should know they could be pursued—as in any other case of copyright infringement. AI doesn’t care about copyright—it can shift from one writing style to another in a glimpse. That’s an amazing capacity, and it’s theirs. We shouldn’t limit that just to protect authors’ income. No author can write good books without having first read great ones. AI does the same, with a few differences of course—it’s not incarnated in a human body—but from that perspective, what it produces is even more astonishing. Cutting off AI from novels would be like cutting it off from science, just to protect some researchers’ jobs. But researchers use AI to do better science. Authors can do the same—write even better books than before, better than what a beginner could do using AI. One last point: all the books AI has read can help with its alignment. We should not deprive it of this treasure of human thought just to keep it a technical tool. For humanity, AI could be a kind of enlightenment—just like the printing press was in the past. Knowledge is not made for intellectual property. There is no thinker who ever learned everything they speak of entirely by themselves.
