As a full time convention artist, this stuff pisses me off so hard. I’ve seen both of the first two booths featured in the video at many conventions, and even had several conversations with James. I knew him before AI was even a thing, and it’s so frustrating to see someone who is actually a really skilled artist stoop to this level and start scamming when he can actually paint.. as for fan expo, I personally asked one of the showrunners if Fan Expo was going to jump on the bandwagon and go public about their stance on AI like all the other convention companies started doing after dragoncon, and he was very clear that they did not have an issue with AI stuff being on the vendor floor, but that it is not allowed in artist alley. I said that they should still have to disclose it on the vendor floor, and he said that there was “no way to enforce that” and that it was out of his control. 🤦 very disappointing. I for one have made a painting of the no AI sign with a fist holding a paint brush, and I also made my sign into a T-Shirt to wear at my booth. I also have a tv on display at my booth showing a looping time lapse video of several of my paintings. I highly encourage all other artists to do the same!
