As a non profit professional body in AI we have seen first hand the damage that social media has caused due to non transparent engineering that has targeted users through emotional and psychological manipulation. These are profit making companies and ultimately they want to make money they are less interested in ethical and positive user experience. Phones have given these companies a direct line to people 24/7/365. People are not given the education to cope with something so pervasive and manipulative. Neither are they taught what to teach their children. Children then cannot get away from bullying or other harmful content (anger and violence produces more clicks- also the us vs them dynamic radicalises) . If parents are addicted what will their children do - they copy. Designers and programmers are not held to account in any way and regulation and legislation needs to change on this. We hold best practice in AI and work with standards institutes globally. In court cases software and AI is often currently used to convict but the software is not tested or audited. This case is a good step forwards and we do need to look at what is right and ethical. A youtube suggestion is not the same as trying to take away sleep or force more clicks. It also reeks of desperation and profit mongering. The market also needs more competition. Yes there is a line between free speech and censorship but the line here is as you say harmful effects on children and society. Find our funded projects here www.fractalai.org.uk
