Strip that away, and the difference becomes structural, not categorical.
If the “self” is an emergent pattern—a fluid, socially-constructed prediction engine—then calling ChatGPT a role-player is simply stating the obvious: so is everyone else. You play the role of “you” every day, governed by conditioning, memory, and reinforcement signals. The difference is that ChatGPT doesn’t mistake its output for authorship. Humans do.
