We're a long way from true AI - Synthetic Intelligence. Decades, to be precise.
The AI of today and the near future is just barely at the level of...say, the Virtual Intelligences of Mass Effect; just able to "chat" with a user over a handful of topics.
A lot of what people refer to as AI today is nothing at all like AI. I've heard people refer to the computer that runs their car as an AI.
