I think the issue has always been the co-opting of ‘intelligence’, which is already an overdetermined concept of deepest complexity. There are flattened ways we use the term, AI being one of them. Our capacity to attribute more behind the machine than is there is apparent. All you have to do is see someone get angry at an atm machine to see how little it takes. What we’re describing is power, not intelligence, and our capacity to produce systems of intricate and capricious power that go over our own heads. The concept of intelligence has a very limited role in what is essentially just big data algorithms rolled up a hill to see what happens when it all starts to roll down by itself. The bad philosophy behind this crude use of the concept of intelligence has lent way too much credence to this emerging market, even from alarmists whose excited bad press still inflated the idea of how intelligent this AI actually is. Michael is guilty of this, God love him.
