I'm a programmer so might be biased but what is often missed in these discussions is that these AI tools are thus far unprofitable for these companies. OpenAI, Anthropic, etc are all running at losses so you can prompt for a picture of a cat with wings. I feel it's not fair to portray these companies as "evil" when they are investing significant sums of money into these technologies. These tools are being used to help detect cancer, forecast the weather and help students learn more effectively. Yes, there are downsides, but there are downsides with alcohol, cars and guns and no one talks about that.
