This raises an interesting question about what images become popular in the in the first place. The entire digital art community consented to this idea of sharing their digital images online. Presumably we would know that our artworks would be copied by other artists online. It was a community of artist online. Some, like the ones filing the law suit, rose to great prominence in that community. Their professional careers also bloomed with clients around the world who shared this community. Now we have AI programs codifying a particular style of imagery originated by the few most successful online artists. How can an AI program compete with the artists it was trained on? Surely only if the art it now creates is better than that of those artists. 1) Those that purchase the AI art would have to have so little understanding and appreciation of art as to be indifferent to the qualities of each. Or 2) The quality of the artwork these famous online artists created in the first place was of such mediocre value and quality that even an AI program could recreate it. Another perspective is that now AI has codified these styles of artworks we can leave the famous artists, their styles, and the AI to fight (or draw) it out. Maybe they can paint some muscle bound images of each other with stupid swords looking angry having a big battle. And all the other artists can get on with exploring other expressions of art.
