Interesting that you chose to focus on tokens as the 'unit of exchange' for this discussion rather than models, which produces these tokens. The open source Chinese models have been doing a great job keeping the Silicon Valley closed source AI companies honest, and I'm a user and a fan myself both in my day job as well as a 'professional hobbyist' at home. As of now, corporate America is still mostly avoiding Chinese models and Chinese software, seemingly out of habit more than anything, but that feels like it's changing. One thing I would watch out for would be any type of large scale espionage (like the Huawei cellular chip scandal from a decade or so ago) that could potentially give the US an easy way to ban these models from corporate America and lever power back to the closed source AI providers in the US. Seems like it would be an easy lever for the US to pull if the US gov really gets too concerned about Chinese models working their way into critical infrastructure here in the US.
