I’m a professional graphic designer who sometimes does illustration work. I thought much the same things about generative AI, until I was able to try it out. It’s not a fix-all, but it is an amazing tool. If you can describe a style, a subject, and background effectively to the AI, the results are sometimes amazing. I become an art director, tweaking details, styles and composition details until I get something I like. You can make reference art for a character you are still designing! Another way to think of it is a hyper-custom image search. My personal style is very idiosyncratic, so seeing my strange ideas in popular and developed styles is a great inspiration to further develop my own. I would recommend actually trying it out (my business has a trial version of Copilot); it isn’t the same thing as actually creating art, but it’s a powerful “self-collaborative” tool.
