Maybe the word “art” itself is a bit confusing for English speakers? In my native language, the words for “artist” (hudozhnik), “art” (iskusstvo), and “digital art” (just “art” from English language) aren’t related and even sound completely different. What’s more, digital art is rarely considered true art (iskusstvo) - something you pour your soul into. It’s usually seen more as a product - the word “art” from the English language. “Iskusstvo” (true art) is for artist to express oneself, “Art” (product) is for consumer to be liked and bought.
We tend to separate these concepts more clearly, which is probably why the debate around AI isn’t as controversial here. AI makes cheap and beautiful product, not true art. But you can make true art using AI, if you put your own thoughts or emotions into it, and can explain it, like a collage technique. If you call absolutely everything “art” and everybody “an artist,” then of course things get confusing - and just anyone can be considered an artist. Both the guy who draws 300 chest icons for yet another mobile match-3 game, and Leonardo da Vinci - whose Last Supper is packed with symbolism and has sparked 500 years of discussion - end up being called the same thing.
I think AI will change the industry and completely replace digital artists in areas where a visually appealing product is needed for sales - like mobile games, online co-ops, and other time- and money-grabbing projects. Why to pay more for the same quality? (or even worse, if we talk about junior CG artists)
But it won’t be able to surpass real artists - those who pour their soul and meaning into their work, and who we love for meanings, rather than for beautiful product.
Miyazaki expressed his characters through their stories and personalities, embedding meaning into them - not just visual beauty. That’s what makes him a true artist (hudozhnik) - not the beautiful backgrounds and visual character designs alone. The people who drew all that beautiful things didn’t exactly become well-known.
