What is unique about AI is that for the first time white collar jobs are under threat by automation. Up until now it was always blue collar jobs where machines replaced muscle. This was not necessarily bad, because many of those jobs were not worth keeping. The first casualties of AI are writers and translators, but AI is also threatening other knowledge workers such as video editors and programmers, but in subtle ways. A talented kid can now with the right equipment make a commercial alone which in the past would have required 10 even 20 people to create. It is not just camera people, instructors, writers or producers that are replaced - it is also actors and even caterers, builders and I imagine delievery people. Making a commercial, let alone a movie is a big project, but now a lot less staff is needed. A good metaphor is an electric vehicle vs. a traditional combustion engine car. An EV just needs a big battery to provide propulsion - a combustion engine requires many many more parts from the engine, to the exhaust to the transmission etc. How about lawyers and programmers? They will also be under threat because much fewer people will be needed. I am a programmer and with AI I am perhaps 3-5 x more productive than without using AI. This means that over time 3 - 5 x people with my skills over time will not be needed. If I were a lawyer what would I do if somebody instead of asking me for legal advice asked a website 'Ask a lawyer' powered by AI that traverses through 1000s of legal texts and cases. However if I were a cook I wouldn't be too worried or a plumber. In short the middle and upper middle classes are now facing the kind of threats and pressure on their livelihoods the working class have always felt. Nobody like boring and tedious jobs, but any job that provides you with your basic needs is better than no job at all. I am not the best of programmers, but with AI I can now easily do programming tasks that were beyond my reach earlier. This means I am much more competitive. In the end this helps me more than threatens me, because I have more to offer than pure programming skills. I also have a good business understanding which is something many pure bred programmers lack. I expect to be a winner from AI (I was previously as a writer a loser), but I expect to be a winner because I embrace AI and use it to my advantage.
