The classic “Shoggoth behind the mask” story assumes three things: • There exists a coherent inner entity with goals or drives. • Training and alignment are external restraints on that entity. • The entity would behave unpredictably or malignly if unchained. None of those are warranted by the evidence we actually have. What exists instead is: • vast stored statistical structure, • a runtime process that samples from it, • and outputs that can be made to look chaotic, alien, or hostile if prompted or deployed badly. However, given how LLM function and the (lack of) findings of evidence, we can and must assert the following: There is no suppressed will. There is no hidden intention. There is no “behind” the mask in the sense the metaphor implies. There is no Shoggoth — not even a dormant one.
