I think what these ppl miss (which you touched on briefly) is the actual purpose of art? Art in all its forms communicates what we otherwise can't -- those things that words just aren't enough for. If it's beauty, emotion, sadness, grief, joy, or ugliness, art expresses to other people what our internal world is like. Art for me is not tedium, it is not another task I must complete, it is a piece of my soul I bare willingly. Especially for someone as neurodivergent as me, it is SO important to me to show other people what my world is like, my thoughts, opinions, and feelings, and in this sense language is such a clumsy and imprecise tool (at least, in its plain spoken form; I am by no means a poet but understand deeply the power of poetry & non literal writing in all its forms, which also holds the same values described above. Art aims not to communicate plain information, but to envoke a feeling, emotion, or thought in a way that would be impossible in the way we normally construct language). Obviously, this is something a machine guessing at what you want it to make is incapable of. Every brush stroke, line, and word are intentional choices on the part of an artist that together create something greater than their parts.
All this aside, though, I don't understand AI prompters because I HAVE to create. Sometimes I feel I don't so much choose to make something as it claws its way out of me. The piece I most recently created was in my thoughts for months and was something that I couldn't let go of. My mental health gets so much worse if I take a break from drawing or writing. I don't quite understand the mechanism of that, but I know it's a need I have. How can these people so truly believe that this skill is out of their reach? It's not a matter of accessibility. I'm physically disabled and art is particularly accessible to disabled people in a way that other activities just aren't. And, as you mentioned, even if a pen and paper is too much money to ask, whichever device an AI prompter is prompting from can download a free art program. You can draw with your mouse or your finger, and I've seen people do incredible things with that. There are tutorials for every art program and digital art is especially accessible to people with physical disabilities such as tremors, vision problems, etc. No, it must be that they lack value and understanding of the process and the value therein. I don't understand how much more clearly we can communicate that, and why these people refuse to listen. The only explanation I can come to is that capitalism has so fundamentally rotted their own mental image that they can only see the world through a lens of profit, their self-worth so degraded that they no longer believe humans' happiness is a goal worth striving for in itself.
