This is already happening on large industrial sites. I spoke to an operations manager a couple of years ago about the details of why a mining or other resource company would use driverless trucks, and he told me that they don't save any money between driver pay and the cost of the automation, but there was millions in savings in lost time and coordination. Driverless trucks don't have to stop to pee, they don't have to stop for shift changes, they don't make decisions on feel and slowing down, they can be in constant contact with all other movements and drive at exactly the right speeds to move things optimally.
