I have become an avid user of AI assistants. My largest task is writing a novel — I'm about 30,000 words in. I use the assistants for research, some of the actual writing, and organizing (all my own ideas). I've also written some short stories, done a financial and engineering report for an LLC I manage with environmental problems, planned a trip, and many other tasks, some major and some minor. I reached a similar conclusion: no one AI assistant does it all well.
For novel writing I am using ChatGPT to organize and stay organized (a Custom GPT called Novel Writer); I am writing the creative chapters in Claude — it's a huge help and more creative than ChatGPT. ChatGPT seems to lose continuity when dealing with long threads (many tokens); also, as a thread nears its token limit, uploads into the thread become lost, and if the thread is too large it suddenly stops and says you've reached the limit (I have the Pro subscription in both — $20/month). Claude seems to last longer; as it reaches the token limit it compresses the thread to make more room so it doesn't simply end, and it will give you a warning as it approaches the limit.
Uploading files was a problem too — having to change threads frequently was causing issues by having too much of the thread taken up with uploads. I discovered Projects, first in ChatGPT and then in Claude. Within a project, all the chats/threads can see all the project source files. In ChatGPT the file number is limited to 20 per project; additional files can be uploaded to individual threads. Claude allows unlimited files in a project plus files in a thread as well — for a book with potentially more than 100 chapters, I'll be able to have all the chapters uploaded for reference when writing the next chapter, plus story strands, research files, etc.
Finally, regarding my top two helpers: I was getting lost with so many files, references, and archive files being saved in file manager, getting mixed up and spending more time organizing than writing. I discovered Custom GPTs in ChatGPT and am using "Novel Writer" to help me better organize and track my work. I moved it into a project so I still get some common file storage capability. So my plan is: stay organized with ideas, workflow, protocol, research, and chapter storage in Novel Writer within a ChatGPT Project — but write individual chapters in Claude.
Originally I tried Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, and dabbled in a few others; they all fell short on large tasks. I still use Copilot occasionally. I hope this was supportive and helpful!
