This is a thought that's been kicking around in my head for a while and is maybe relevant to the "inspiration not stealing" thing even though it's not strictly about visual art... Marcel Proust's "à la récherche du temps perdu" is inarguably one of the greatest, most significant literary achievements in human history. The title translates literally as "in search of lost time" but the first English translations called it "Remembrance of Things Past", and that might actually be a better name for it... See, the thing about this novel is that it happens entirely, and explicitly, in the mind of the author. It is not a retelling of things that happened, it is an exploration of the memories of those things. Famously, a lot of it hinges around recollections of the smell of baking cookies! Smell is, after all, more deeply connected to memory than any of our other senses. Reading this work, even if you haven't had the exact same experience, it is easy as a human to relate to this *kind* of experience. But AI doesn't know what it's like to smell something. It doesn't know what it's like to remember something, and to have an emotional attachment to that memory. AI can never be transported back to its childhood by a passing whiff of a bakery's oven, because it has no sense organs, no childhood, no experiences at all. The thing that makes art worthwhile - or at least one of the things - is the ability to communicate things about ourselves and the events and experiences that make up our lives, and AI just fundamentally lacks *anything* that would make that possible.
