The amount of unknown about our ownselves,... self awareness, souls, blurry notions of good and evil, moral philosophy etc show us exactly how much we need to go back to the research table and discuss this topics reliably. Is there a soul? Does it matter? Is the brain any different than any highly complex robot operating system will be? As a brain also operates under physical laws it should also be essentially guided by mathematical and logical principles albeit not understood by us as of now or is it something partly supernatural, highly unlikely but the argumentation exists... That alone shows how little we know and... we should change that. I believe understanding ourselves and our need for rights, moral institutions etc will more reliably be understood when we interact with another sentient life form be it robot or ET some time in the future we'll have to see what entirely otherly biengs want, their desires and act in the best common interest.
