i agree largely with the majority of your points. senior sde at amazon who left on my own intuition a few months ago - the headlines never matched what was actually happening internally. the best talent largely was still running the ship - i think faang is just realizing it’s cheaper to hire the more expensive senior level engineers vs many cheaper juniors due to productivity gains - and those productivity gains existed before AI and are just amplified now.
my career advice forever now for engineers coming out of college is to start at a smaller firm where you get crushed with job responsibility that extends beyond your comfort zone and sink or swim. once you can swim, go get your bag at faang.
