I tried to explain to my friend what the actual issue with AI art was when I saw job listings willing to pay someone more money to generate art than the next listing was willing to pay someone to actually produce it from their own hands, and I was like, "That's backwards af. Why does the person doing that get more money than the person with the real skill?" His defense was something along the lines of, "It's just like how music is sampled and used to make something new, so I don't understand why y'all are upset about that when that stuff's just gonna happen." I then had to sit there and try to get him to understand the argument I was trying to make, which was essentially that, on top of it being unethical because a large number of people whose art is being stolen can't fight the battle in court like a larger company, these AI prompters should not be getting paid more to generate art that they otherwise couldn't create without the AI. If you stop a person from sampling music, they don't suddenly not understand how music is made. They just have to do it themselves. If you take a pencil away from an illustrator, he doesn't suddenly lose the ability to illustrate, he just has to apply what he knows to the next tool and adjust. Conversely, if you take AI away from the prompter, they're no longer able to output what they've been "producing." It's literally just theft and counterfeiting.
