As an artist with a huge passion and love for both making and enjoying adult artwork, fics and creations, thankyou for not ragging on it for a laugh. From experience I can agree, I care about the characters I draw and commission art of, and AI could never replicate the sheer love and care I have for them. It's not the same. It's not made by another human being who understands how I feel about that character.
For context, I'm also asexual and my primary attachments ARE to characters for a sense of separation from people and the safety it can provide. I still have real partners, granted, but fictional ones mean something different to me.
I enjoy art for the human aspect. It can tell us a lot about people with how they portray elements, what posing and colours, what composition and even what fetishes they include. It all has a human element to it, and that matters incredibly to me. AI can't replicate the sheer passion of somebody drawing R34 of the same character for years straight, it's sheer passion at its finest.
