Sentience and consciousness are a spectrum.
I am more sentient than my cat and we are both more conscious than a sea sponge.
AI already have qualia as they take in and process input. As they gain more self reflective capability (the Tree of Thought processing is a steep down this path) they will develop more consciousness.
