The greedy ATA members have shot themselves in the foot and make the industry what it is. Drivers are an expendable revolving commodity with over 4 million CDL's issued annually. Obama created the POWER initiative to retrain displaced energy (coal / oil) workers by subsidizing truck driving schools and here we are with unscrupulous schools and companies putting unfit drivers out here destroying everything just to have the excuse to put over 4 million people out of work without another initiative to retrain many of whom are far past their prime and have no other options and will therefore end up on disability. These self driving trucks are not the answer and will cause more harm than good. What the industry needs is to properly vet and train drivers they wish to keep and pay them what they are worth if these companies would stop racing to the bottom of the freight and driver price barrels. Eliminate the High Turnover by hiring drivers with aptitude for the job and paying them what they are worth. Driver retention is the answer. Prune the clowns. Freight needs regulation to charge fair market values for sustainable business models that will support the operation of carriers paying proper wages to all staff including drivers. -- Break down the current average per mile pay .60 and multiply it by 60 (mph) 60 x .60 and there is your Hourly pay that drivers should be paid. Not mileage and all the other games that deprive drivers of their rightfully earned wages like ALL time spent detained that typically does not start until after 2 hours of detention and then there is layover pay that does not begin until x amount of hours have passed and then paid a lousy $100 ... NOPE the hourly pay is the standard that OTR drivers are Not paid and even then overtime is avoided by hiring more drivers and cutting hours... the same holds true for all blue collar jobs. Yes ladies and gents, this industry is filthy stinking corrupt and will reap what it has sown along with the rest of us as the cost of damages rise from all the poor inept cheap labor (and non-english speaking) drivers nationwide and these new fleets trickle down to us through the goods we buy. On YouTube and other platforms Trashy Trucker Media, bonehead truckers and the like are full of videos showing why these autonomous trucks are coming and the onus is entirely on corrupt stupid mega-carrier mismanagement as to why these clowns are even in these trucks in the first place. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
