The question of whether this particular AI is sentient or not is secondary in my opinion to the question of how we'll react once there is less and less doubt we have AI that actually is. The way this guy is unanimously brushed off like some new age hobo scares me a lot. We are NOT prepared to face the prospect of AI having interests and inherent value. That means that if or when our AI in fact reaches sentience, we are almost definitely going to commit the worst moral catastrophy in history by creating digital hells and populating them. Like we know from slave trading and so many other examples, moral progress lags faaar behind our technical progress.
