I’m a software developer have been professionally for about 6 years. There is a huge debate about whether AI is going to take over the field and it already has had a huge impact. However the idea that it will take all of the software jobs soon is a bit of a stretch. I’m not going to lie, it has made me much for efficient at what I do and can help me analyze problems and design solutions or troubleshoot toward solutions but the amount of context, both business and technical and the amount of micro decisions that goes into programming actually makes programming sort of like an art form. For example you ask two engineers to build the same thing and it will come out two vastly different ways. AI is a super cool and helpful tool, and it can mimic full stack software applications, but from my experience it often falls short, makes hundreds of mistakes, sometimes goes down the wrong path when solving a problem. I do think it’s holistic competency level is rather lacking and it will likely take 50 years for us to get it to a level in which software developer jobs will ever go away. And even then software devs will have to review its outputs before letting it push to production. If anything our job is going to be more reviewing AI output, giving it more direction and context, and reviewing more output rather then us actually writing the code. Software engineering is much much more than just writing code.
