What do you mean "we" need to track the effects of AI? The effects are being tracked, mostly by people who see the tremendous opportunity to control and manipulate the world. Think about the development of weapons--guns and nuclear bombs. Did that lead to a better world? No. Weapons have led to a global business of military contractors making billions from fear and distrust, which I suspect that they stir up at every opportunity. Weapons have led to more dictatorships and repressive governments. Humans will eventually destroy Earth, long before the billionaires can realize their silly musings of colonizing another planet.
