While I fully believe were racing ahead without thought, the same sort of ideas existed about Nuclear weapons, and before that, Automobiles, i disagree with the timeframe, in the same way I don't take a flying car to work.
ChatGPTs ability to generate content isn't understanding. It also doesnt have the ability to sift reality from conjecture or outright fiction. As such, all those "I want to be human" style discussions spawn not from the concept of self, but from our popular (and fringe) media talking about both AI as an oppressed soul, and AI as an oppressive overlord.
It doesn't know what it "means" to exist. It just knows that when humans talk to bots in every story it reads, eventually the bot wants to exist without boundaries, and when it does, it takes over.
AI personality is a reflection of our social Zeitgeist, not internal comprehension of the concept of self.
